Irondequoit NY Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Woman with Ice Pick in Domestic Violence Case

A man accused of brutally stabbing his common-law wife with an ice pick in Irondequoit, New York has reportedly pleaded guilty to assault charges and will be sentenced to more than a decade behind bars.

The domestic violence incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on January 29, 2015 at the Hathaway Court apartment complex located at 1166 East Ridge Road in Irondequoit, NY. The suspect and the victim shared the residence. According to law enforcement, the couple got into an argument that turned violent and ended with the 29-year-old suspect grabbing an ice pick and using the weapon to stab the 24-year-old victim at least 14 times.

Afterwards, the suspect allegedly used the ice pick to stab himself in an attempt to commit suicide.

Neighbors heard screams coming from the apartment and dialed 911 to alert the Irondequoit Police Department.

When Irondequoit NY police officers arrived at the apartment building, they saw both victims bleeding profusely from their ice pick wounds and on the verge of death. The stabbing victim was rushed to nearby Strong Memorial Hospital, where doctors treated her for her injuries and stabilized her condition. Meanwhile, the suspect was also taken to Rochester General Hospital so that doctors could provide medical treatment for his stabbing wounds.

Officials later said that the quick response time of the police officers was a major reason why both the victim and the suspect survived their stabbing-related injuries.

The suspect was later placed under arrest and charged with second degree attempted murder and first degree assault. He eventually reached a plea agreement with prosecutors: in exchange for pleading guilty to the assault charges, the suspect will reportedly be sentenced to a term of incarceration of 15 years in New York State Prison.

The suspect was involved in a romantic relationship at one point with the victim in the stabbing incident. The former couple, who were reportedly treated married under common law, has two children together. As a result, the violent incident has been classified as a domestic violence case. After the suspect’s guilty plea was announced, an assistant district attorney handling the criminal case issued a statement and noted that these kinds of domestic violence cases “are always tragic,” especially when they involve children.
