High School Students Injured in School Bus Crash on Ramapo NY Highway
Between 40 and 60 students sustained minor injuries after the two school buses they were riding on crashed in Ramapo, NY.
The frightening bus accident occurred on the Palisades Parkway a short time after 2:00 p.m. The two buses were transporting sophomore students from Northern Valley Regional High School, which is located in Demarest, New Jersey. According to a post on the high school’s Facebook page, the students had traveled from NJ to NY as part of a sophomore class trip. The buses were reportedly en route to Woodmont Day Camp in New City, NY when the crash resulted in those plans being shelved.
Both buses were traveling southbound on the Palisades Parkway and approaching Exit 11 when one of the buses reportedly slammed into the rear of the other bus. The force of impact was severe enough to injure dozens of students who were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Afterwards, local law enforcement received multiple calls about the bus accident and dispatched police officers and ambulances to the area. Emergency medical responders treated many of the students at the scene of the accident and ultimately transported many of them to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip NY and Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York. Since there wasn’t enough room in the ambulances for all of the injured students, some of the accident victims were transported via other school buses that were at the scene.
At this time, it is still unclear why the buses collided. Depending on the circumstances leading up to the crash, it is possible that the Northern Valley Regional High School District could be liable for damages stemming from the bus accident.
