Car accident with injury

Two drivers survived a fiery car accident on the Route 490 E and 590 N ramp. One of the vehicles spun out of driver control as the second driver attempted to right his vehicle to avoid the collision. Unfortunately, both cars collided head-on. The vehicles burst into flames. One of the drivers was injured. He was treated and released according to the police report.

Head-on collisions, sometimes called frontal collisions, frequently result in devastating bodily injuries to drivers and passengers as well as significant property damage to vehicles and surrounding property. Frontal collisions occur when one vehicle crosses a median or center line and then crashes into another approaching car, truck, or motorcycle. A frontal collision may also happen if the driver intentionally or unintentionally veers into the wrong direction of the road. Distracted driving, suddenly changing lanes on the road due to a stopped vehicle or construction, passing lanes on a two-lane highway or road, defect on the roadway, excessive speed, loss of driver control, or vehicle malfunction can result in a head-on collision.

The drivers in this example were apparently lucky. Head-on collision accidents frequently involve fatal or catastrophic injuries. The magnitude of force involved in these collisions predisposes drivers and passengers to serious head, brain, or spinal cord injuries. Paraplegia and quadriplegia sometimes result. Quite often, people involved in a frontal collision suffer bone fractures, muscle and tendon tears, and internal organ injuries.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the vehicle’s weight and speed at which both vehicles were operating has an important bearing on the damage suffered by drivers and passengers in a head-on collision. For instance, if a truck or other type of heavy motor vehicle drifts into the opposite lane because the driver is suffering sleep deprivation, distracted driving, or alcohol or drug intoxication, the accident is likely to cause horrific and life-altering bodily injuries to passengers in the vehicle. Other drivers and passengers affected may be killed.
